The “Wheelchair of the Future" is Here

Since its introduction to the general public in 2003, the INDEPENDENCE® iBOT® Mobility System has created greater awareness of the importance of providing equal accessibility to every person with a disability. In fact, it has been called the “wheelchair of the future.”

What makes iBOT wheelchairs so special?
The iBOT 4000 Mobility System, the next generation of iBOT technology, is a patented, gyro-balanced personal mobility system that provides new levels of freedom and accessibility to people with disabilities.

The iBOT offers a combination of five unique functions, including: Balance, Stair, 4-Wheel, Standard and Remote.

These functions allow users to:

  • Go up and down a flight of stairs with or without assistance.
  • Reach high objects and provides mobility at an elevated eye-to-eye level.
  • Lower themselves to sit comfortably under a desk.
  • Travel over a variety of uneven terrain, such as sand, gravel or grass.

How is INTEGRIS involved with the iBOT System?
The Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Hospital at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center recently signed an agreement with Independence Technology, a Johnson & Johnson company, to become one of a handful of iBOT evaluation centers in the country. This agreement will enable INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe to perform assessments on the iBOT 4000 Mobility System on people with disabilities throughout Oklahoma.

“For years, INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Hospital has continued to incorporate research, innovative programs and treatment therapies to give our patients the best potential for successful recoveries. Continuing our commitment to our patients’ success means striving to lead the way with innovative technologies and products,” says Al Moorad, M.D., medical director at INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe. “The iBOT 4000 Mobility System is revolutionary in providing greater independence for individuals with spinal cord injury or disease, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy. As the only facility in Oklahoma offering this product through a partnership with Independence Technology, INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe furthers its commitment to providing the most challenging healing.”

What are the benefits of the iBOT Mobility System?
“The iBOT Mobility System has empowered users all over the nation to go where they want to go, helping satisfy the natural human desire for mobility and freedom,” says Ola Abou-Sabe, vice president of marketing at Independence Technology. “We are pleased that INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe has decided to become an iBOT evaluation center. We believe that this mobility system can change the way people with disabilities view the world and the way the world views them.”

It is estimated that approximately two million Americans use a wheelchair or scooter-type mobility aid.
