Helping Solve the Diabetes Puzzle
The ediba Diabetes Center of Excellence offers help through programs stressing diabetes management success.

New Steps Urged to Cut SIDS
There is so much to learn when you have diabetes. Whether you have had diabetes your entire life or have been newly diagnosed, the ediba Diabetes Center of Excellence team will help you make sense of the puzzle. The center offers classes and personal consultation designed to meet your needs at both INTEGRIS Baptist and INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center campuses.

Classes are taught by certified diabetes educators, nurses and dietitians, who use a combination of teaching, counseling and lifestyle changes to help you learn to manage diabetes and enhance your quality of life.

Weight Crisis May Go Off the Scales
To sign up for any of these programs, first talk to your doctor about which is most appropriate for you. He or she can then refer you to the diabetes center based on your specific medical needs.

Most insurance plans will cover all or part of these programs. Check with your insurance provider about coverage for outpatient diabetes education.

The ediba Diabetes Center of Excellence offers individualized education and selfmanagement training in all aspects of diabetes self-care, including:

  • Diabetes disease process
  • Nutrition
  • Physical activity
  • Medications – pills and insulin
  • Monitoring
  • Crisis prevention
  • Preventing, detecting and treating complications
  • Emotional/lifestyle changes
  • Diabetes and pregnancy.

In addition, a variety of specialized programs are offered.

Protect Your Skin From the Sun
This group program is for those who are newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (noninsulin dependent) or for those who have had no training in managing diabetes. Th is is also a good refresher course for the most current diabetes information. The program includes seven hours of training with another hour of individual follow-up. Topics include:

  • The disease process
  • Self-management and treatment
  • Home blood glucose checking
  • Nutrition – eating out and changing recipes
  • Preventing problems
  • Foot care
  • Exercise.

Gestational Diabetes Program
Women who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes can take part in special two-hour small-group program or individual sessions, and an hour of follow-up with a dietitian or nurse. Topics include:

  • The disease process
  • Goals of control and desired results
  • Home blood glucose monitoring
  • Ketone testing
  • When to alert your doctor
  • Nutrition and exercise.

Insulin Pump Program
This program provides training on use of a continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion system (insulin pump). Six to nine hours of training, in small-group or individual sessions, are provided by diabetes specialists who are certified pump trainers. Topics include:

  • Pump operation and getting ready for infusion
  • Site care
  • Safety and emergency situations
  • Daily adjustments and instructions
  • Hypoglycemic management
  • Insulin pattern management
  • Carbohydrate counting and meal planning
  • Monitoring therapy.

AIM (Advanced Insulin Management) for Better Control
AIM is a personal program for those ready for advanced training in insulin therapy who are moving to intensive insulin therapy using basal and bolus insulins with multiple injections. Topics include:

  • Insulin management
  • Problem solving
  • Carbohydrate counting
  • Nutrition planning
  • Crisis management and preventing problems
  • Self-management.

Outpatient Insulin Programs – Type 1 or 2
These individualized programs are designed for people who have just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, or for those with type 2, which requires insulin. The basic knowledge and skills needed to begin insulin therapy without hospitalization are covered. Depending on the type of diabetes, the programs each include four to nine hours of personalized instruction, covering such topics as:

  • Insulin administration and management
  • Self blood glucose checking
  • Ketone testing
  • Nutrition planning
  • Crisis intervention and problem solving
  • Insulin adjustments and supplements
  • Blood glucose pattern control
  • Preventing problems.
