No. 8 IN A SERIES
RISK-ADJUSTED OUTCOMES:
SURVIVAL RATESARE Half THE STORY
It's the cardinal rule of cardiac outcomes. Survival rates must be adjusted to reflect the degree of risk a given patient pool presents. Otherwise, a survival rate is meaningless.
As consumers learn more about comparing hospital performance - and as all hospitals issue their outcomes reports - it's a rule the public must understand, right up front.
INTEGRIS Health has long been known for treating "the sickest of the sick" - a distinction generally held by the most capable hospital in a given area. Risk adjustment acknowledges that very sick or older cardiac patients are more difficult to heal than young and/or relatively healthy patients - and aims to level the playing field.
Risk adjustment ensures the more easily achieved high survival rates at lower-risk hospitals won't be seen as superior performance, and hospitals that treat sicker patients won't be penalized.
