John S. Chaffin, M.D.

John Chaffin, M.D. is chief of cardiac transplantation at Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. He is also the medical director of the cardiac intensive care unit at INTEGRIS Baptist. He currently performs heart and lung transplants and is the head of the artificial heart program at INTEGRIS Health and has placed and replaced many left ventricular assist devices. Dr. Chaffin has an active practice in cardiothoracic surgery performing more than 300 open heart procedures per year as well as pulmonary and vascular surgery.

Dr. Chaffin received his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University, his M.D. from the University of Oklahoma, and residency at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center together with fellowship training and research at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Chaffin began his surgical practice in Denver, Colorado, helping to establish transplant services there, but returned to Oklahoma City in 1985 at the outset of the development of the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute, and worked closely with Dr. Zuhdi and Dr. Christiaan Barnard as well as Dr. Allen Greer in development of the transplant center, and has been active with cardiac transplants since that time. Dr. Chaffin is board certified in general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and transplant surgery. He has written multiple articles on cardiac surgery and transplantation and has written several chapters in transplantation text books.
