Douglas Horstmanshof, M.D., is the program director of the Heart Failure Institute at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. “Dr. Doug” is also the transplant and left ventricular assist device (LVAD) cardiologist for the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute. He cares for the majority of patients with heart failure awaiting cardiac transplant as well as the patients with LVADs. Previously, he was part of the heart failure and transplant faculty at Washington University in St. Louis / Barnes-Jewish Hospital, moving to Oklahoma in 2005 to establish the heart failure program at INTEGRIS Baptist. Dr. Doug is also the acting program director of the pulmonary hypertension clinic at NZTI.

Dr. Doug earned his undergraduate degree at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he was a four-year recipient of a National Merit Scholarship. He attended medical school at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. While at Northwestern he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. Subsequently he completed internship and residency at Washington University in St. Louis / Barnes-Jewish Hospital and then worked for a year there as a cardiology hospitalist, or inpatient specialist.

Dr. Doug then went on to complete a general cardiology fellowship at Wash U, and afterward had the privilege of serving as medical chief resident for the internal medicine training program, providing administrative and educational oversight to approximately 150 medical residents. The final step in training was in serving as the Hawes Fellow in Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation at Wash U, followed up by a faculty appointment there. During that time, Dr. Doug also performed clinical research supported in part by the NIH investigating cardiac metabolism. He is board certified in both internal medicine and cardiovascular disease with additional training in heart failure and transplantation as noted above.

As part of the cardiac transplant team at NZTI, Dr. Doug is focused on individualized patient care with a human touch while simultaneously utilizing some of the most advanced therapies available in the state of Oklahoma. He is a regionally active educator and speaker with a passion for educating health care providers and patients about heart failure.
