 | Your fluids are restricted to _________cc or _________ cups per 24 hours
Conversion of cc’s to household measurements: 1500 cc’s = approx 6 ¼ cups 1000 cc’s = approx 4 cups 240 cc’s = one cup (8 ounce) 30 cc’s = ounce-or-2 Tablespoons-or-6 teaspoons 15 cc’s = Tablespoon-or-3 teaspoons 5 cc’s = 1 teaspoon
**Rule of Thumb** If it melts at room temperature, it is a fluid.
What counts as a fluid?
- Anything that is fluid at room temperature!
- All drinks
- Ice (1 cup = approx ½ cup fluid; melt ice and measure for accuracy)
- Ice cream/sherbet (½ cup serving = ¼ cup fluid)
- Pudding
- Popsicle
- Soup/Broth
- Sauces/Gravies
- Fruit: ½ cup serving = 1/3 cup fluid for liquid-rich fruits (citrus, melon, grapes)
Tips for fluid control:
- Avoid salty foods; follow your recommended sodium restriction!
- Drink only when you are thirsty
- Moisten your mouth with lemon wedges, chewing gum, or hard candy
- Try putting lemon juice in ice cubes; the acid helps reduce the feeling of thirst
- Rinse your mouth out with water; just don’t swallow it!
Do not guess at your fluid intake. You will need to keep a “liquid log.” Write down how much fluid you can have in 24 hours. Each time you have some fluid, measure it out and subtract that from your daily fluid allowance.
Remember: Following your fluid restriction may reduce your risk of developing ascites and other complications.
