Narcolepsy

There are four prominent symptoms of narcolepsy, however not all symptoms are experienced by all people diagnosed with narcolepsy.

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness.
  • Cataplexy, a sudden loss of muscle strength which is usually caused by emotions such as laughing, crying or anger.
  • Sleep paralysis is characterized by the patient awakening from sleep and being completely aware of their environment, yet unable to move their arms or legs.
  • Visions of vivid and life-like images may occur when falling asleep or upon awakening and may be associated with sleep paralysis.

Effective treatment of narcolepsy is available.

Treatment increases daytime alertness and decreases symptoms of cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic hallucinations.
