HOW TO USE YOUR IMAGINATION TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH

Guided Imagery is a technique in which you deliberately create images in your mind that will help you manage stress, promote wellness and speed healing.  It is a skill that is easy to learn and to incorporate into your daily life style.

It is most helpful to set aside a time and place where you will not be disturbed.  Wear loose, comfortable clothing.  Sit in a comfortable chair or lie down with a pillow under your head.

You may want to dim the lights or put on soft music or use a guided imagery audiotape.

For example, a guided imagery for releasing tension and stress is to imagine:

  • A tight, twisted rope that slowly untwists
  • Wax softening and melting
  • Tension swirling out of your body and down the drain.

As you imagine one of these, allow your body to “untwist, soften, melt”.

By practicing this process two or three times a day or several times a week, you will learn how to use the power of your imagination to produce calming and healing responses in your body.

The audiotapes that I am most familiar with are those in a series called healthy Journeys, created by Belleruth Naparstek.

These can be purchased at bookstores and the prices range from $10 to $17.  If you want to try some out before you buy, you can check them out of the Center’s library, located at 4900 N. Portland, Suite 102.
