Impella

The Impella device is a minimally invasive, catheter-based cardiac assist device. It is the smallest rotary blood pump in the world.   The pump is inserted percutaneously through the femoral artery and into the left ventricle.  It is considered to be much less invasive than major surgery.  It can serve as a temporary support device in patients suffering from acute cardiogenic shock, when the heart is not pumping enough blood.
