Transmyocardial Revascularization
Transmyocardial Revascularization

Transmyocardial revascularization or TMR is a procedure used to relieve angina or chest pain in seriously ill patients who are not candidates for a second bypass surgery, or an angioplasty procedure. In this cardiac surgery, the surgeon uses a laser to make a series of tiny channels or holes from the outside of the heart into the heart's pumping chamber. The bleeding from the laser stops quickly. While TMR is not fully understood in how it resolves angina or chest pain, it is believed that new blood vessels are stimulated to grow increasing coronary blood flow to the heart and ultimately reducing chest pain. Remember that chest pain is the heart muscle's signal that is needs oxygen-rich blood.

Your doctor will work with you to determine if this treatment is appropriate for your particular case.
