Aortic Aneurysm
Aortic Aneurysm

An aneurysm is a bulging section in the wall of a blood vessel that has become stretched out and thin. Think of it as a bulge in a hose from backed-up water pressure. An aortic aneurysm is a bulge in the aorta, the large blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

Treatment of an aortic aneurysm is based upon its size and how fast it is growing. Surgery is needed for large or fast-growing aneurysms, or when symptoms are present. Generally, the chance that an aneurysm will rupture increases with the size of the aneurysm. A ruptured aneurysm is a very serious, life-threatening condition.

Many times an aortic aneurysm is detected during a physical exam done for other medical reasons. Since every case is unique, your doctor will work with you to determine the best treatment plan for you and evaluate the benefits of surgical repair.
