Stress Test or Echo Lab
Stress Test or Echo Lab
The Medical Director of the Cardiac Diagnostics Department is
Dr. Santosh Prabhu and the
Clinical Director is
Robyn Tebow, BSRT (R)(S).

The Echocardiography Lab or Echo Lab is open Monday through Friday for procedures, with on-call staff available for after-hours and weekend needs.

There are six ultrasound technologists on duty, with over 70 years of combined experience assuring our patients of quality tests by skilled technicians. All Tech I Echocardiography team members have completed an accredited training program, or are in-training, and are preparing to take the registry board exams. All Tech II Echocardiography team members have achieved active status in the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in the fields of Adult Echocardiography (RDCS) and Vascular Technology (RVT). Some have also achieved active status in Pediatric Echocardiography (RDCS)

2D Echocardiogram 2D Echocardiogram
This procedure is an ultrasound exam of the heart and of the major blood vessels connecting to the heart. It allows visualization of the cardiac structures. By using color-flow Doppler and other types of ultrasound Doppler, this exam is able to measure the direction, velocity or speed, and quality of the flow of blood through the cardiac structures. It can reveal areas affected by a myocardial infarction (heart tissue damage) or evaluate heart murmurs or birth defects that affect the heart. It is performed on any age patient, from newborn through senior citizens.

Stress Echocardiogram
This exam utilizes 2D Echocardiogram equipment to obtain pictures of the heart, before and immediately after, a Stress Test. Hidden coronary disease may be detected by looking for motion changes of the cardiac muscle after vigorous exercise, indicating a possible blockage of an artery.

Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)
This exam uses a specialized probe that is passed through the patient's mouth and into the stomach by the cardiologist. From this perspective, the cardiologist can visualize structures of the heart that cannot be seen by conventional 2D Echocardiography due to various patient conditions.

Carotid Duplex Ultrasound Carotid Duplex Ultrasound
This is an ultrasound imaging and Doppler exam of the carotid arteries that carry blood to the brain. Common reasons to perform this exam are history of stroke (cerebral vascular attack or CVA), transient ischemic attack (TIA) with weakness/numbness on the left or right side of the body, vision changes in one eye (temporary blindness), or when a murmur is heard in the neck vessels (bruit).

Duplex Venous Ultrasound
This is an ultrasound imaging and Doppler exam of the veins of the arms or legs. It allows the physician to "see" the vessel and by using color flow and other Doppler equipment, evaluate the flow of blood and determine if a blood clot is present. This is useful for patients with suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Duplex Arterial Ultrasound
This is an ultrasound imaging exam of the arteries of the arms or legs. It allows the physician to "see" the vessel. By using color flow and other Doppler equipment, the physician can evaluate the flow of blood and determine if any narrowing or stenosis of the vessel is present.

ABI Workup Complete Ankle-Brachial Index or ABI Workup
This is an ultrasound Doppler exam of the arteries of the arms or legs. By using various Doppler probes and blood pressure cuffs on the arms and legs at specific spots, this exam evaluates the flow of blood and helps to determine if any narrowing or stenosis of the vessel is present, and to what degree. This exam is a more thorough exam than the ABI screening exam. A screening ABI can be done to evaluate for suspected peripheral arterial disease by walking a patient on a treadmill until vascular symptoms present themselves, then the complete ABI workup is conducted to document the degree of disease and recovery time.
