We welcome the arrival of hospital report cards.The challenge will be making sure consumersinterpret the reports accurately. Some reportswill be oversimplified, therefore misleading.

And still at issue is the yardstick by which excellence is measured:That is, the industry's best quality benchmark. For 15 years, we'vemeasured our survival data against the New York State Registry:

• It's the only audited national quality benchmark. So patient risksaren't inflated and all deaths are counted. Others are self-reported,thus less reliable.
• It's big enough to producestatistically valid results.Not all are.
