The public would like to be informed about the quality of health care services so they can select the best provider for their treatment needs. Quality of care is difficult to define and quality improvement requires a long-term investment in organization and structure to support process improvements. Furthermore, the quality results of today are very much a reflection of planning and implementation, which might have occurred several years ago. It is not unusual for a quality initiative to take two to three years to yield full results. INTEGRIS Heart Hospital has used detailed clinical registries since 1990 to guide improvements in cardiology and cardiovascular surgery outcomes. It is now planning to share this information with the public. We believe the public should know what we know about quality and use this information to make better choices about their care.
What is a quality driven hospital?
"INTEGRIS Heart Hospital is a quality driven hospital," according to Stan Hupfeld, CEO of INTEGRIS Health. The public needs to know the depth of commitment to quality of care and the actual results achieved in our institution. In a series of data releases INTEGRIS Heart Hospital quality experts will discuss the advantages and limitations of quality information and public reporting. For the first time, Oklahomans will have a seat at the table for quality and outcomes reports from our institution. Included will be reports on major cardiac illnesses like acute coronary syndromes and congestive heart failure as well as common treatments like coronary stents and bypass surgery. With this greater transparency, the public can see survival statistics, success in avoiding complications and reductions in medical errors. They will be able to see new technology for quality improvement being applied through a planning process called a 'focused factory'. In a novel business arrangement, the INTEGRIS Heart Hospital doctors, nurses and administrators have joined forces to collectively plan process improvements and reward successful treatments with special bonuses for quality care. Good quality requires not only good doctors and nurses but also a well-constructed organization dedicated to achieving quality outcomes. Thus we at INTEGRIS Heart Hospital believe we are a quality driven institution and hope you use our outcomes reporting to make the right choice in cardiac care for you and your family.
