Moving and Physical Activity

After your hip or knee replacement surgery, it is important for you to begin getting up and out of bed as soon as possible.  During the pre-op class, you will also be instructed in exercises to help gain strength in your new joint and speed your recovery.  You will be treated by both occupational therapists and physical therapists during your stay in the joint center.

Beginning the day of surgery, you will perform leg exercises to decrease soreness in your leg and start the healing process.  The following morning you will be visited by physical therapy and occupational therapy.  You will be asked to sit on the edge of your bed with their help and perhaps even take your first few steps.  Later that day you may participate in a group exercise program as well as advance your walking.

Each day that you stay at the joint center, therapists will help you increase your walking, improve leg exercises and build endurance as your body recovers.

Initially, you will likely have someone with you when you get up to walk to ensure your safety.  Later, as you are progressing, your therapist will instruct you in safe, independent mobility.
