Infertility is described as the inability to conceive naturally after 12 months in couples in which the woman is under 35 years old and after six months in couples in which the woman is 35 or older. About 10 percent of American couples have infertility-related problems. Of that percentage about 30 percent of problems occur in women, 30 percent occur in men and 30 percent are unexplained.

An infertility specialist is either a fellowship-trained reproductive endocrinologist or a gynecologist with extensive training and experience in treating complex infertility problems. In either case, special training in all aspects of reproductive disorders is desirable. Most general obstetricians/gynecologists have received some training in infertility during their residency. Most of them deal with many other issues in women’s health care and do not have the time or facilities to diagnose and treat complex infertility problems.

Basic infertility evaluation and treatment can be rendered by general OB/GYNs. In circumstances where the couple has not been successful in conceiving for at least one year under the care of a general ob/gyn or if the woman is over age 35, it is advisable to be seen by an infertility specialist. Sometimes it is advisable to see an infertility specialist for a second opinion even before these conditions are met in order to learn the available treatment options, their cost, risk, and success rates. If complex infertility therapies such as inseminations, fertility shots, or in-vitro fertilization are considered, they require specialty laboratories and seven-days-a-week service which is usually only offered by infertility specialists.

Drs. Kallenberger and Bundren have had extensive experience in infertility treatment since the early days of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in the United States (early 1980’s). Dr. Reshef is board-certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (fellowship 1988-1990).
