Treatment for Hearing Loss

The process of rehabilitation in the treatment of hearing impairment is step by step.

There are some types of hearing loss that can be treated medically or surgically.  Therefore, once one is willing to admit that he/she has a hearing impairment and decides to seek treatment, it is wise to first visit an ear specialist.  These doctors are called otologists.  Otolaryngologists, sometimes called ear, nose and throat or ENT doctors, also have extensive training in treating ear-related problems.

It is especially important to see a doctor quickly if one experiences a sudden hearing loss or a loss of hearing in only one ear.

Once your doctor has ruled out any medical problems that can be treated, he/she will most likely suggest that you visit a certified audiologist or hearing instrument dealer to be fitted with hearing instruments.  Certified audiologists have either a masters’ or doctors’ degree in their field and will have the letters CCC-A after their name.

With hearing instrument technology auditory cues and important words are more likely to be heard. Ideas are better understood and expressions readily identified. The individual experiences this difference in many ways, such as watching television at a normal volume, hearing family and friends more effectively and with less effort, and not requiring people to repeat as often. All these improvements make life easier, not only for the person with the loss of hearing but also for the person’s family, business associates, and friends.

Traditional hearing instruments will help in many situations but are not a perfect solution for impaired hearing. Nothing compares with God’s miraculous design in the creation of a normal, healthy ear. However, it is of great benefit to have access to the best in modern technology, as well as excellence in service and counseling.
