Journalist and breast cancer survivor Kathy LaTour and certified Imago relationship therapist Martha Baldwin Beveridge, L.C.S.W., B.C.D., spoke in Oklahoma City on Sunday, June 1, at two “A Celebration of Life” events, sponsored by the INTEGRIS Cancer Institute of Oklahoma., ProCure Oklahoma and Cancer Care Associates. The events honored cancer survivors and their families and friends.
Each year communities across the nation join in celebrating National Cancer Survivors Day with events that unite cancer survivors and recognize the progress made in the early detection, treatment and research of cancer, which is in great part responsible for survivorship.
Since her diagnosis of breast cancer in 1986, LaTour has been active in the national cancer survivor community. She often says that while cancer did not take her life, she has given it willingly to educate, empower and enlighten the newly diagnosed and those who care for them.
A writer and editor for more than 30 years with a master's degree in communication, she is currently a senior lecturer and an award-winning faculty member in Corporate Communications and Public Affairs at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Additionally, she helped found and now serves as editor at large for CURE: Cancer, Updates, Research and Education, a national quarterly magazine serving the informed cancer patient. CURE has received numerous awards from both national and local organizations.
In her capacity as a journalist, LaTour turned her cancer experience into a book, The Breast Cancer Companion, which is based on interviews with more than 120 women, 75 men, and health care professionals.
LaTour has spoken in more than 30 cities in the United States and Canada. She delivers keynote speeches on the importance of psychosocial support for cancer survivors to both survivor audiences and medical professionals. In 2004, she premiered her one-woman show, “One Mutant Cell,” which she has presented for more than 30 audiences across the country.
As a licensed clinical social worker and board certified diplomate (B.C.D.) in clinical social work, Martha Baldwin Beveridge has been in private practice as a psychotherapist in Oklahoma City since 1975, working with individuals, couples, families and groups. She also consults with businesses to enhance communication and problem solving skills. Ms. Beveridge was selected as one of “Fifty Women Making a Difference” and nominated for Woman of the Year by the Oklahoma Journal Record in 2000, 2001 and 2002. In 2003, she was selected for the Journal Record’s Circle of Excellence.
For eleven years Beveridge hosted Change of Heart, a weekly radio therapy program, which aired on KTOK and WKY in Oklahoma City. She also hosted call-in programs on KLTE and KNTL Radio and is currently co-host of Graceful Living, which airs Sunday afternoons on KTOK Radio.
A nationally recognized expert, Martha has appeared on numerous radio and television programs including Donahue, Geraldo, Sally Jessy Raphael, Tom Snyder and Sonya Live!
Her books include Self-Sabotage, How To Stop It and Soar To Success (Warner Books, 1989); Beyond Victim, Overcoming Childhood Abuse (Rainbow Books, 1988); Loving Your Partner Without Losing Your Self (Hunter House, 2001); and The Heart of Healing: Facing Cancer and Other Life-Threatening Illnesses. She is creator of the video tape Stop Sabotaging Success (Dyscovery Resources, 1994) and has produced a library of audio tapes and resource booklets.
Beveridge’s presentation, hosted by the Central Oklahoma Cancer Center at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center was held from at the Shartel Church of God, located at 11600 S. Western Ave., Oklahoma City.
Both “A Celebration of Life” events featured complimentary lunch, music and butterfly releases to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors.
