What Is a Stroke?

Just as a heart attack is the result of a loss of blood flow to the heart, stroke occurs when an artery in the brain is blocked or bursts. A stroke, in short, is a brain attack. When a stroke occurs, it kills brain cells in the immediate area. The majority of patients don¹t report to the emergency department until 24 hours after the onset of stroke symptoms, which increases the damage stroke can do and lessens achievable recovery.

The James R. Daniel Stroke Center™ has:

  • State-of-the-art rehabilitation opportunities for stroke survivors
  • Educational opportunities to identify and minimize the risk of stroke, and formulate a quick response if signs of stroke occur
  • Highly specialized stroke response and treatment from an interdisciplinary
  • Stroke Team
