For the past seven years, Mary has been a stroke education nurse and has presented approximately 400 community education programs on stroke prevention and awareness. She coordinates multiple community-based stroke screening events as well as conduct classes in patient and family stroke education. Mary also has assumed a leadership role in developing an interdisciplinary quarterly stroke educational class for discharged patients and families. These classes allow stroke patients / family members to ask questions of physical, occupational, speech and rehabilitation psychology therapists. In addition, she organizes and facilitates a monthly stroke support group. Mary is the the chair for the community education subcommittee for a statewide stroke task force. Through this subcommittee,she helps develop and continues to actively participate in the stroke education update / trainings ("Train The Trainer") for volunteer and parish nurses. The purpose of this training update is to provide volunteer and parish nurses a simple and concise format for stroke prevention and awareness within their congregations. Mary has presented posters and concurrent sessions at regional and national conferences.
