Outcome Reports

The Institute of Medicine (referred to as IOM) of the National Academy of Science has concluded that the fragmentation of the delivery of healthcare services frequently results in suboptimal treatment, safety concerns, and inefficient use of our health care resources.

To insure that scientific knowledge is translated into practice, IOM has recommended that there be established coordinated systems of stroke care that integrate preventive and treatment services and promote patient access to evidence-based care.

ISMC’s Stroke Center of Oklahoma is one of a kind in our state where we are making strides in insuring that scientific stroke advances are being translated into clinical practice across our continuum of care --- from pre-emergent care education/prevention through E.D., ICU, Acute Care and Rehabilitation.

How are we translating science to practice? Protocols for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke subtypes as well as transient ischemic attacks (TIAs).
1) researching and assessing current stroke baseline data, 2) designing and implementing clinical practice guidelines, and 3) creating a outcomes management plan.

National Award:

Because of our concentrated focus on Stroke Management for ISMC, we did receive an award from the American Heart Associations (AHA), Level One Recognition as an official participating hospital in the Get with the Guidelines-Stroke Program. We are the only program in Oklahoma that has received this award from AHA.

The AHA's Get With The Guidelines (GWTG) program is designed to help hospitals ensure that patients are treated and discharged according to evidence-based medicine. The GWTG program is the first hospital based program to receive the "2004 Innovation in Prevention Award" from Health And Human Services past Secretary Tommy Thompson. We purchased the product and began entering data into the database in 2004.
