Our health care team that is expert in care of very sick children is here to take care of your child. The first sight of your child in the Intensive Care Unit can be upsetting and confusing. Your child may not recognize you and will be laying in bed, connected to machines with lines and tubes, and may be given medicine to stay still. Each of the wires and tubes you see is there to help the doctors and nurses care for your child.
You are an important part of your child’s recovery and your presence is needed during this time. Ask questions to stay informed. Feel free to ask questions as many times as you need. During this stressful time it is difficult to remember everything that has been said to you, our staff understands this. Participate in your child’s care when appropriate by asking how you can help bathe or feed. Bring in pictures of your child and family. This helps us see your child the way you do. Bring in favorite toys, blankets or music that is comforting to your child. Take care of yourself. You will need to take breaks to eat a proper meal and get a good night’s sleep.
