Hand Hygiene

Hand hygiene, a very simple action, is the most important thing that can be done to reduce the spread of germs. Hand hygiene is the newest term to describe washing or decontaminating your hands whether done with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rubs (gels and foams).

Hand hygiene with soap and water should be done when hands are visibly soiled, before eating and after using the restroom. Lather the hands well, covering all areas (including the fingernails and between fingers) and rub with friction for at least 15 seconds. Rinse well and dry.

Alcohol-based hand rubs are a quick and convenient way to “de-germ” the hands when they are not visibly soiled. When using hand rubs, lightly cover all surfaces of the hands being sure to include the fingernails and between fingers. Rub hands together until dry, usually 15-20 seconds. Do not rinse.

By performing hand hygiene, you have taken a step toward keeping yourself and your family healthy.
