Volunteering

Hospice volunteers are a valuable part of the hospice team, in fact they are often referred to as “The Heart of Hospice”. Their selfless contributions of time, talent and caring are invaluable to our patients, their families and the hospice staff.

As a hospice volunteer with INTEGRIS Homecare Solutions Hospice, you can do anything…

  • Hold a hand.
  • Use a computer.
  • Address envelopes.
  • Feed a pet.
  • Make a speech.
  • Bake a cake.
  • Listen to cherished memories.
  • Pat a shoulder.
  • Give a hug.
  • Touch a heart.
  • Change a life (maybe even your own).

Choose from the following volunteer opportunities:

  • Patient and family support—offering companionship, respite care, socialization and support to patients and family members in their homes.
  • Clerical work—answering phones, filing, addressing envelopes in the hospice office. May also assist with community activities such as fundraising, decorating, making crafts for patients, distributing flyers, etc.
  • Bereavement support—extending friendship and support to caregivers and family members of hospice patients following the death of the patient.

Training

After an initial screening process, volunteers receive training that addresses:

  • Active listening skills
  • Philosophy of hospice
  • Care and comfort measures
  • Spiritual care
  • Safety
  • Psychosocial issues associated with dying
  • Caring for the caregiver
  • Bereavement

Time Commitment

Volunteers are asked to commit to one year of volunteer service following training. The exact amount of time they give each week or month depends on each volunteers’ availability.
