“Robot” is Newest Creative Communicator for Grove EMS

Scott Weiss, Paramedic Supervisor with Grove EMS, is responsible for arranging the acquisition of Andy Ambulance.

January 19, 2009

He is INTEGRIS Grove General Hospital Emergency Medical Services’ three-foot-tall communicator who will grab the attention of almost any audience—especially children—and enhance their learning. Andy Ambulance was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Robotronics and arrived at Grove EMS this February. His eyes open and shut, and with lights blinking and siren blaring he can move forward, backward and spin around while emitting select musical numbers such as favorite “Cops” theme song Bad Boys. Andy has ears to listen and a voice to speak through an operator via transmitter.

Current Andy Ambulance operator, Scott Weiss, Paramedic Supervisor with Grove EMS, is responsible for arranging its acquisition through an April 2008 grant request to the Frank Family Foundation Fund. Lori M. Frank and her siblings manage the philanthropic funds which their parents established, and the amount of $10,000 was issued to Grove EMS on January 19, 2009 for the purchase of Andy Ambulance—educational robot that helps to teach first aid, emergency response and public safety to children. “It’s an honor to be asked,” says Ms. Frank. “If the children just learn to call 911, Andy is worth having.”

A fully functional robot, Andy will facilitate further development of existing youth educational programs, with a specific duty to interactively communicate with children. He’ll make his debut at INTEGRIS Grove’s annual Camp Bandage Jr. this April, and then later attend Camp Bandage in October. These are long-standing programs which educate some 3,000 students annually from Delaware, Ottawa, Craig, Mayes and Adair counties, and are not only used to teach children about public safety and medical emergencies, but to free up any fears about EMS. “The opportunities are endless,” explains Scott, “because we can tell things to children with Andy while they touch him, talk to him and even chase him.” Scott has further plans for Andy to make the rounds to schools, civic safety presentations and even parades.

This is not the first procurement arranged by EMS’ persistent, tenacious, married-with-two-sons Scott Weiss, who is willing to “ask” anyone for funds and wait for the answer. Through a previous grant request several years ago, Scott arranged to acquire “Gator” for Grove EMS, a John Deere utility vehicle capable of transporting victims from crowded areas, like football fields and stadiums, to a waiting ambulance. Today, he is making plans to procure a SUV specifically to transport personnel and to pull Andy’s trailer. Scott is always willing to share with any individual or organization Grove EMS’ vision to further educate and serve residents of the Grand Lake area!
