Student Governing Board visits INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. |
[Download Application]
Since 2001, INTEGRIS Grove General Hospital has made available to high school seniors in Grove and Jay the opportunity to gain a position on its Student Governing Board. In addition to the privilege of being on the board, one senior from each school will be awarded a $1,000 college scholarship by the hospital. Students must complete an application form supplied by the hospital, and return it to their school counselors by September 1, 2009. The selection process involves a committee comprised of members of the hospital’s administrative staff, as well as school officials. Criteria for selection include the students’ school activities, community involvement, G.P.A., A.C.T. score, and field of health care interest.
The program’s objective is to educate and involve the students in the scope and management of health care services provided by INTEGRIS Grove General Hospital, and to provide information about health care careers. Monthly meetings may include a brief tour of a specific department with explanation of its responsibilities, capabilities, and the educational requirements for a career in that field. Students are encouraged to job shadow, and for some there are opportunities to “intern” for a few hours in their department of choice.
Amber (Finley) Davis served on the Student Governing Board in the 2002-2003 school year, and today she works as a nurse at INTEGRIS Grove General Hospital.. Amber explains, “When I applied to be on the Student Governing Board, I didn’t know for sure if I wanted to be a nurse.”
When the students toured INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, and got to talk with surgeons about what they’re capable of doing for patients, Amber began to get excited about the possibilities. “But,” she says, “it was spending time with the physicians and staff in Grove and in the pathology lab at INTEGRIS Baptist in Oklahoma City, in particular, that helped me decide to pursue nursing.” In May 2008, Amber graduated with a RN BSN.

Though many applications for a position on the Student Governing Board are received each year, only a select group of students will serve. INTEGRIS Grove General Hospital has a vested interest in seeing many of these students return to our community as medical professionals.
