With groundbreaking festivities behind them, INTEGRIS Canadian Valley Hospital is well underway with moving dirt on their $27 million expansion project which will bring 42,000 sq. ft. of new patient care space and 14, 000 sq. ft of renovated space. The project includes 18 new emergency rooms, 4 additional ICU beds, and 30 additional inpatient beds. Extensive renovations will be made to the current facility for radiology services, respiratory therapy, laboratory, pharmacy and dietary services.
The hospital though, is just one of many businesses expanding and developing on property south of I-40 and Garth Brooks Boulevard in Yukon. During the recent groundbreaking festivities, hospital Governing Board Chairman Ray Wright commented that just ten years ago wheat fields stretched as far as they eye could see. "We never envisioned at that time, while standing knee high in wheat, that the hospital would grow to this magnitude -just look at us now and where we're headed in the future."
Construction cranes and building equipment have been a permanent fixture in this area since the hospital opened late 2001. Major retail anchors such as Lowe's, Staples, and Kohl's are now surrounded by numerous restaurants, automotive shops, banks, and hotels. Construction is well under way on Target which is scheduled to open this fall followed by the opening of JCPenney in 2009.
The city recently announced a major 40-acre land purchase, adjacent to the hospital, which will be developed to accommodate retail tenants, professional offices, medical services and physician offices.
Yukon City Mayor John Alberts supported Mr. Wright's comments and added, "The hospital expansion project is an opportunity for economic development and an opportunity for growth right here in our own backyard. Not only are we seeing an increase in business development, but an increase in housing development, school enrollment, and job opportunities."
Mr. Wright concluded his thoughts in stating that, "Hospitals have a way a triggering business development and economic growth to a community. I think you can look around and see that statement speaks for itself." So, the next time you see a wheat field, ask yourself, what will it become in ten years?
