Immunocompetent patients have the capability to develop an immune response.  This measure includes non-intensive care unit patients, those not admitted or transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) within 24 hours of their arrival to the hospital.  These immunocompetent patients should receive an initial antibiotic within 24 hours of their arrival to the hospital that is consistent with the recommended current guidelines.
