Evidence-based research recommends that patients who are on beta-blocker therapy should have their beta-blocker continued through their perioperative period, unless there is a condition present that would warrant that the medication be discontinued or not given. The perioperative period in this measure is defined as 24 hours prior to their surgical incision through their discharge from the post-anesthesia care/recovery area.
Patients who are on a beta-blocker on admission and that receive this medication through the perioperative period have a reduced risk of cardiovascular complications. Research illustrates that the continuation of this medication during this time reduces coronary or heart-related events and complications.
