Surgical Care

The Surgical Care measures focus on evidence-based care for reducing postoperative complications.  For specific surgeries, practices to prevent surgical site infections, adverse cardiac events, and the development of a deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot to the leg, are implemented.  Order sets incorporating these guidelines have been developed to ensure continued improvement in these areas.

To prevent surgical site infections, the Surgical Care measures include the timing and selection of antibiotic administration and the appropriate hair removal method.  They also include measures related to body temperature and glucose control for certain procedures.

The appropriate administration of a beta-blocker, for those patients on this medication at admission, is recommended to prevent adverse cardiac events.  In addition, measures to prevent deep vein thrombosis are implemented.
