The performance of blood cultures for inpatients with severe pneumonia is recommended to optimize therapy.  This measure includes pneumonia patients transferred or admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) within 24 hours of arriving to the hospital.  A blood culture should be performed within 24 hours prior to or after arrival to the hospital.
