About the On Your Own Program
Mary Ann Bauman

Mary Ann Bauman, M.D., internal medicine, medical director for Women’s Health and Community Relations, INTEGRIS Health

"On Your Own" is a one-of-a-kind, innovative, day-long program in which doctors and other healthcare professionals take a look at life and health issues facing today's young people, specifically high school juniors and seniors. Interactive presentations on sexual health issues, nutrition and relationships are presented.

In order for students to get the information they need, they are given notepads to anonymously write down questions for the health professionals to answer aloud. Two separate sessions are held: one for the girls and one for the guys.

Dr. Mary Ann Bauman, who helped pioneer the On Your Own concept, is the featured speaker and moderator for this event. Dr. Bauman's lively presentation about the female body provides honest, straightforward information. She describes and explains pelvic exams and pap smears in a way that is designed to convince young women of the importance of these often misunderstood exams.

For the young men's program, Dr. Bauman discusses what students need to know for his health and hers. And, for both sexes, she stresses the importance of abstinence, but recognizes that students often make other choices. With that in mind, Dr. Bauman shares information about teen pregnancy, as well as sexually transmitted diseases.

In addition to Dr. Bauman's presentation, Karen Massey, a registered dietician, educates students on healthy lifestyle decisions, including diet and exercise, diet pills and eating disorders.

Another session focuses on managing relationships. The students are given  the necessary tools for empowerment, understanding different communication styles and interacting with others.
