Polyps are fleshy clumps of tissue that form on the lining of the colon or rectum. Small polyps are usually benign. However, over time, cells in a polyp can change and become cancerous.

Do you have a family member who has been affected by colon cancer? Do you wonder if you are at risk for this disease? An estimated 145,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed this year. Fortunately, this cancer is one of the most preventable of cancers if you are proactive in getting risk assessments and early screenings.

Doctors believe that most colon cancer begins with a polyp – an extra piece of tissue that grows inside the colon. Various screening procedures can detect polyps. Colonoscopies can detect and remove polyps, which aids in the prevention of colon cancer. Colon cancer may grow silently in the colon or the rectum for some time before the victim begins to feel any symptoms. When detected early, this disease can usually be cured.

Most people diagnosed with colon cancer have no family history of the disease. However, more than 25 percent of patients do have a family member who has also had the disease. These individuals have a greater risk of developing colon cancer than the average
person.

The INTEGRIS Cancer Institute of Oklahoma, in conjunction with INTEGRIS Digestive Health Center, offers a free, individualized and confidential colon cancer risk assessment based upon personal and family history. A personal plan for risk reduction can be tailored to meet your needs, based on your level of risk.
