In the 1960’s citizens of Grove took health care matters into their own hands and led the initiative to build a brand new hospital. They succeeded. In November 1963, Grove General Hospital opened its doors and has served northeastern Oklahoma with quality care for more than four decades.
Again, leaders are taking health care into their own hands in joining together to support the building of a new $56 million facility. The first leader to step up to the plate was Ed Townsend, INTEGRIS Health board member for more than eight years, by pledging $1 million to the INTEGRIS Grove General Hospital Foundation’s Building Fund.
The Townsend name is very familiar in the Grand Lake area, as he and his wife Barbara are very active in the community. The Bank of Grove, of which Ed Townsend is owner and CEO, was built to focus on community needs and to support local charitable, educational and civic causes.
Barbara and Ed Townsend have given many people in need hope. Hope to those children who are innocent victims of sexual abuse and/or exploitation through their involvement and contributions to the Delaware County Children’s Special Advocacy Network.
Hope for Grove teachers to fulfill their dreams in advancing educational excellence in their classrooms through their generosity to the Grove Education Foundation for Excellence.
Hope to children in Delaware County that are in need of health, eye and dental care through the INTEGRIS Grove General Hospital Foundation’s Townsend Children’s Fund. In collaboration with dentists and physicians in the area, $53,611.30 was disbursed from the fund in fiscal year ending June 2007 alone, to give hope for better vision, better teeth and an overall better quality of life by meeting their medical needs.
“I recently had a young boy from this area who was suffering from a toothache. My office, in cooperation with his school administrator, arranged for him to receive his dental treatment through the Townsend Children’s Fund,” explains Audrey Crawford, DDS, of Grove Dental Associates. She adds, “I have rarely seen a child so grateful. I’m also grateful because I realize the benefits of a healthy child; it improves well-being, ability to concentrate in school, and nutrition. I also believe this is a young man that will know how to give back to his community some day by the example set by the Townsend family.”
