INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Hospital 6th Annual Courage Run

It’s time once again to gear up for the 6th Annual Jim Thorpe Courage Run scheduled on Saturday, May 1, 2010. Consisting of a 5K wheelchair race, open 5K run and 1-mile run/walk, the Courage Run is chip timed on a USA Track & Field sanctioned course.
The Jim Thorpe Courage Run was proposed in 2004 by Jeffery Kragh, Ph.D., clinical psychologist at INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Hospital. Kragh relayed the race idea in which those treated at Jim Thorpe Rehab could also participate to Susan Shepard, INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe’s clinical manager. Kragh is well known in the local running community for coordinating a series of fun runs and participating in various races and duathlons. When searching for the run’s location, local business woman Rachel Odom (who was interested in participating in an event in southwest Oklahoma City) was consulted. Odom and her father, Paul Odom, suggested hosting the run at Chatenay Square Shopping Center, a development of P.B. Odom Construction Company. The area surrounding Chatenay Square was deemed perfect for this run and was a perfect opportunity to showcase southwest Oklahoma City.
Participation in the Jim Thorpe Courage Run has increased during the past five years, including over 200 participants at last year’s race. All proceeds from the Courage Run assist patients with rehabilitation needs that traditional reimbursement does not cover. Many health care vendors, local community businesses, physicians and volunteers help make the race a success each year. A.E. Moorad, M.D., INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe medical director, encourages previous patients, wheelchair athletes, families and community members to participate in this growing event.
The Jim Thorpe Courage Run will take place May 1, 2010. The race begins at 9 a.m. at Chatenay Square located at S.W. 104 and Pennsylvania. Please join us in supporting and honoring those who have demonstrated courage through the rehabilitation journey.
