INTEGRIS Health Committed to Environmental Stewardship

June 6, 2008

The climate is rapidly changing and there is a desperate need for a global response.  In an effort to help protect the environment, INTEGRIS Health is participating in a new initiative offered by Dell. The program is called “Plant a Tree for Me.”

Each time INTEGRIS Health purchases a computer from Dell, the health care system will donate to the program. These additional funds will be used to plant a tree for roughly every computer sold.

The Problem:
Computers contribute to the amount of carbon in the air. The electricity used to operate each and every computer on the planet is converted into carbon that is released into the atmosphere. Too much carbon results in changes in the climate. With the countless number of computers in operation today, it is easy to understand the concern.

The Solution:
As simple as it may sound, trees are the answer. During an average 70-year lifespan, one tree will absorb 1.3 tons of carbon dioxide. That is more than enough to offset the environmental impact of one computer.

“As a large consumer of energy and computers, we feel it is important to do everything we can to protect our environment. This program allows us to offset the carbon footprint of each computer we buy and use during its lifetime. It is a small investment in the future of our environment,” says John Delano, vice president and chief information officer of INTEGRIS Health. “We began this practice in May 2008 and will continue to do so for each computer we buy going forward.”

INTEGRIS Health typically purchases 1,500 to 2,000 computers annually. All used computers are properly recycled.
