R. Murali Krishna, M.D. long time physician from Oklahoma City has been appointed to the Oklahoma State Board of Health by Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry and unanimously confirmed by the Oklahoma Senate. The Board’s mission is protecting and promoting health of the citizens of Oklahoma and preventing disease and injury by assuring conditions by which our citizens can be healthy. He will start a nine-year term beginning June 30, 2008. Dr. Krishna currently serves as president and chief operating officer of INTEGRIS Mental Health and co-founder and president of James L. Hall, Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit. He is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma Heath Sciences Center Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and founding chair and current president of the Health Alliance for the Uninsured (HAU), a not-for-profit organization which started in Oklahoma City in 2005. The HAU is a partnership of the Oklahoma County Medical Society, Central Oklahoma Turning Point, and Greater Oklahoma City Hospital Council in collaboration with other community organizations. Its mission is to improve access to quality health care for the uninsured in Oklahoma County through collaboration and coordination of existing and new resources. He was also a catalyst for advocating the passage of Senate Bill 930 that gives governmental tort protection to physicians and health care providers who deliver free medical care to uninsured citizens.

Dr. Krishna was born and raised in India. He received his medical education at Andhra Medical College in India. He was trained in internal medicine and received further training in psychiatry and behavioral sciences at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, Great Britain. He had further training in psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center where he served as chief resident from 1975 through 1978.

Dr. Krishna is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. He is past president of both the Oklahoma County Medical Society and Oklahoma Psychiatric Association. He has been the recipient of numerous recognitions/awards: Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill in Washington, D.C.; Outstanding Asian American Award for his efforts to help the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing; Festival of Hope “An Evening of Acclamation and Admiration” Award for his significant contributions and leadership in physical, mental and spiritual wellness; 2007 Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma Champions of Health Award in the category for “Champion of the Uninsured”; and just recently the Oklahoma State Medical Association Gordon Deckert, MD Award for Community Services recognizing him for his significant actions and activities to improve the overall health and well being of Oklahoma citizens.

Dr. Krishna is honored to receive this appointment and is looking forward to serving on the Oklahoma State Board of Health in its quest to improve the state of health of Oklahoma citizens.
