OKLAHOMA CITY – June’s INTEGRIS Health Essentials programs and events topics range from the National Cancer Survivors Day Celebration of Life, stroke education, Alzheimer’s disease, joint replacement, surgical weight loss, men’s health, a Young at Heart Senior Prom, CPR, and exercise and fitness to the healing power of color and Tai Chi. Sunday, June 1, A Celebration of Life – You’re invited to attend A Celebration of Life, the 21st annual National Cancer Survivors Day celebrations presented by the INTEGRIS Cancer Institute of Oklahoma. Call the INTEGRIS HealthLine at (405) 951-2277 for reservations at the location of your choice.

  • Central Oklahoma Cancer Center - 2 to 4 p.m., Martha Baldwin Beveridge, LCSW, BCD, certified Imago relationship therapist, Shartel Church of God, 11600 S. Western, Oklahoma City, OK 
  • Celebration of Life and Art Exhibit – In conjunction with A Celebration of Life, INTEGRIS Baptist is hosting its yearly Celebration of Life and Art Exhibit with works by people whose lives have been touched by cancer. The art will be displayed in the lobby of the Troy & Dollie Smith Cancer Center in Building D during the month of June. Opening reception will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 30. Reservations are required.

Tuesday, June 3 and 17, Rx for Stroke Education – Stroke/TIA survivors and patients at high risk for stroke are encouraged to participate in this interactive, multimedia educational class designed to increase the participants’ acceptance and understanding of treatment and prevention options and reduce primary and secondary strokes. Classes are held the first and third Tuesday of every month from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Jones Education Classroom at INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation, 4219 S. Western.

Wednesday, June 4 and 11, Monday, June 23, and Friday, June 27, Memory Loss and Alzheimer’s Disease – Join us for the most recent update on the early detection and treatment of memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease. Make your reservation now for one of the following locations near you to take advantage of the power-packed presentation, noon luncheon and the free memory loss screening.

The free presentation will be held at 9 a.m. at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center. Space is limited.

Tuesday, June 10, and Monday, June 23, Surgical Weight Loss – It’s always best to lose weight through a healthy diet and exercise. However, if you’re among those who have tried but just can’t seem to lose the excess weight that’s causing your health problems, bariatric weight loss surgery may be an option. Join Russell Gornichec, M.D., and the staff of the INTEGRIS Weight Loss Center to learn more about bariatric surgery, including gastric bypass and LAP-BAND. The free presentation will be held at 6 p.m. in the James L. Henry Auditorium at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center.

Tuesday, June 10, Stroke Support Group, Enhancing Your Life: Programs in Your Neighborhood – Join this health and education support group designed for stroke survivors, caregivers and family members. Sessions are held the second Tuesday of every month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Central Oklahoma Cancer Center East Conference Room at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center.

Thursday, June 12, National Men’s Health Week Screenings – Celebrate National Men’s Health Week with INTEGRIS Men’s Health University (Men-U) and receive free health and wellness information, screenings and great door prizes. Health screenings include blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol. The free health fair will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. in the main lobby at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center, 3300 N.W. Expressway.

Friday, June 13, Young at Heart Senior Prom – Don your dancing shoes, your fancy attire and make your reservation to attend the 12th annual Young at Heart Senior Prom. This year’s prom will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Express Event Center, 8512 N.W. Expressway. You can enjoy the lively sounds of Talk of the Town band, delightful refreshments, prom photos and more. Reservations are required and must be made by June 2.

Tuesday, June 17, Lose Big: Life After The Biggest Loser – INTEGRIS Health, Quest Diagnostics, Diagnostic Laboratory of Oklahoma and NewsChannel 4 host the champion of season four of NBC’s The Biggest Loser, Bill Germanakos. Standing at 5 feet 8 inches tall, Germanakos went from 334 to 170 pounds, losing a total of 164 pounds. Now that Germanakos has become “Half the Man,” he strives every day to be “Twice the Man” – for himself, in his career and especially for his family. Now that he has been re-educated about diet and exercise, his goal is to “pay it forward” by helping to educate those who also struggle with obesity. Join Germanakos for this inspirational presentation from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cox Business Services Convention Center, 1 Myriad Gardens, Oklahoma City.

Wednesday, June 18, HeartSaver CPR – PACER Fitness Center is joining up with “HeartSmart” to offer you the latest in CPR training. Learn all the new guidelines and methods for cardio pulmonary resuscitation. Class includes: One-Man CPR, Child/Infant CPR, Choking for Adult, Child/Infant and AED. Cost: $45. The class will be held from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence.

Thursday, June 19, Living Life with Cancer – Because living life fully is important, INTEGRIS Oncology Services now hosts a monthly support group for cancer patients and caregivers. The program is designed for all persons affected by cancer and is open to anyone diagnosed with any form of cancer (recent or long term survivors), caregivers and support persons, regardless of where treatment is being provided. The ongoing support group will be held monthly on the third Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Troy & Dollie Smith Cancer Center Resource Library at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center. If you or a loved one has been affected by cancer, this is a great opportunity to share and make new friends while learning from medical professionals.

Saturday, June 21, CancerCheck – The best defense against cancer is prevention and early detection. The American Cancer Society recommends annual screenings for cancer. INTEGRIS Oncology Services will offer free screenings to the community for colon cancer as well as prostate, breast, skin and oral cancer. The comprehensive cancer screenings will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center. Reservations are required.

Saturday, June 21, You’re Only as Old as You are “Flexible” – Join fitness expert Darlene Paine to learn the benefits of staying physically flexible. Learn and perform a variety of flexibility exercises. Paine will incorporate the use of balls to enhance your flexibility as well. This is an interactive class and attendees must be able to get on the floor. The class will be held at 10:30 a.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence. Cost: $10, which includes a two day pass to PACER.

Monday, June 23, Mind/Body Essentials: The Healing Power of Color – Colors profoundly influence our lives. Consciously choosing colors in our clothing, home and employment settings, and during occasions of healing, enhances our experiences. This session will explore ancient colors associated with a variety of energy centers in our physical bodies. Opportunities will be available to experience your intuitive response to a variety of colors in fabrics. Participate in an overview of the use of colors, but most importantly, become aware of your personal responses and potential for well-being and healing through the conscious and simple use of color. The presentation, sponsored by INTEGRIS James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit, will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence.

Saturday, June 28, Tai Chi and Chi Kung Workshop with Master Wei Lun Huang – INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center proudly presents internationally recognized Tai Chi Master Wei Lun Huang for two educational and in-depth workshops in the art of Tai Chi. These workshops will teach you the principles of Tai Chi movement as well as improved balance and health. Classes will be held at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence. Cost: $40 per session or take both sessions for only $70.

  • Incense Chi Kung – 9:30 a.m. to noon – this easy to learn set of exercises develops core alignment and energy.
  • Traditional Tai Chi Form – 2 to 4:30 p.m. – this is a low impact, graceful ancient exercise form in the Yang style for all levels of participant.

Saturday, June 28, Strength for Caring – This daylong workshop for caregivers of cancer patients covers topics such as understanding cancer and its treatment, meeting the physical and emotional needs of cancer patients, dealing with changing family roles, talking with physicians, managing symptoms such as pain and fatigue and improving the caregiver’s physical and mental health. The free workshop for caregivers will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Troy & Dollie Smith Cancer Center Resource Library at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center. A light lunch will be provided.
