– April’s INTEGRIS Health Essentials programs and events topics range from how to be healthy and “green,” resilient caregiving, weight management, meditation, migraines, CPR, joint replacement, stroke education and support, laughter, cholesterol management, cancer support, balance and exercise, chronic health diagnoses, hypnosis, and the 20th annual Hispanic Health Fair as well as our Health Essentials Preferred Member special event at the Skirvin Hotel.

April 2008, 9 Tips for Your Health and the Planet’s – Stop by INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center during the month of April and receive a free copy of suggestions for how to be healthy and “green,” and tour the newly renovated fitness facility.
 
Tuesdays, April 1 and 15, RX for Stroke Education – Stroke/TIA survivors and patients at high risk for stroke are encouraged to participate in this interactive, multimedia educational class designed to increase the participants’ acceptance and understanding of treatment and prevention options and improve patient outcomes by reducing primary and secondary strokes. Classes are held the first and third Tuesday of every month from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Jones Education Classroom at INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Center, 4219 S. Western.

Wednesdays, April 2, 9 and 30, The Resilient Caregiver – Are you caring for an ailing parent or spouse? Has “normal” been upended in your life? Learn to face your giants and embrace new life as Bruce McIntyre leads you on the journey from bitter reality to resilient living!

Wednesday, April 2, Changing Your Weighs – This comprehensive weight-loss program is aimed at helping you rethink your approach to weight loss by focusing on three important elements: nutrition, activity and behavior modification. Changing Your Weighs is designed to help you restructure your attitude and your lifestyle for permanent weight loss. An orientation session will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2. The actual eight-week program will begin on Wednesday, April 9, with classes continuing weekly through May 28, at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence. Pre-registration is required. Cost includes an eight-week pass to INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center. Discount for Health Essentials members.

Thursdays, April 3, 10, 17 and 24, Your Meditation Class Series – Meditation is good for the mind, body and spirit. Join expert Cyndy Green, BS, to explore meditation for healing, balance and inner peace. Participants in the series receive a knowledgeable framework to create their own meditation practices. Class will be held on Thursday evenings in April from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence. Cost is $40.

Saturday, April 5, Migraines and Exercise: A Reality Check – Join registered nurse and fitness expert Catherine Gardner to discover migraine triggers and how exercise can help. The presentation will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence. Cost is $10 and includes a two day pass to PACER.

Monday, April 7, HeartSaver CPR – PACER Fitness Center is joining up with “HeartSmart” to offer you the latest in CPR training. Learn all the new guidelines and methods for cardio pulmonary resuscitation. Class includes: One-Man CPR, Child/Infant CPR, Choking for Adult, Child/Infant and AED. The class will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence. Cost is $45.

Tuesday, April 8, Do You Suffer from Knee or Hip Pain? – Join the staff of the INTEGRIS Joint Replacement Center for this health information seminar to learn more about the anatomy, symptoms, causes, and advanced treatment options associated with knee and hip pain. The free presentation will be held at 9 a.m. at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center. Space is limited.

Tuesday, April 8, and Monday, April 28, Surgical Weight Loss Seminar – It’s always best to lose weight through a healthy diet and exercise. However, if you’re among those who have tried but just can’t seem to lose the excess weight that’s causing your health problems, bariatric weight loss surgery may be an option. Join Russell Gornichec, M.D., and the staff of the INTEGRIS Weight Loss Center to learn more about bariatric surgery, including gastric bypass and LAP-BAND. The free presentation will be held at 6 p.m. in the James L. Henry Auditorium at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center.

Tuesday, April 8, Stroke Support Group Alternative Medicine for Stroke Patients – Join this health and education support group designed for stroke survivors, caregivers and family members. Sessions are held the second Tuesday of every month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Central Oklahoma Cancer Center East Conference Room at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center.

Saturday, April 12, Hispanic Health Fair – The INTEGRIS Health Hispanic initiative invites you to participate in our 20th annual Hispanic Health Fair on Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds, Hobbies and Crafts Building and Modern Living Building. Free health screenings will be available including glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes and stroke assessments. There will also be screenings (appointments only) for skin, oral, prostate, and colorectal cancer, and clinical breast exams. The Hispanic Health Fair is free and open to the public. Reservations are required for all cancer screenings.

Monday, April 14, Laughter – The Best Medicine – Celebrate National Humor Month with Lyn Hester, vice president of INTEGRIS Marketing and Community Heath Improvement and founder of the National Clown and Laughter Hall of Fame, now a division of the International Center for Humor and Health. Many of you know that Lyn has a wonderful sense of humor … you have read her columns and books, and have spoken with her personally. This is another opportunity to laugh with Lyn, then relax and be entertained by the antics of Scooter the clown. The fun begins at 1:30 p.m. in the James L. Henry Auditorium at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center.

Tuesday, April 15, Cholesterol Management – You know that high cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke. But, understanding what cholesterol is and how it affects your health are only the beginning. Join Justin Sparkes, M.D., as he explains what cholesterol is, what it can do to you, and what you can do about it. The presentation will be held at 10:15 a.m. at the Edmond Senior Center at Mitch Park, 2733 Marilyn Williams Dr. Reservations are required.

Tuesday, April 15, Stroke Tune Up – Now that you are out of the hospital and have plenty of questions, join the staff of the INTEGRIS James R. Daniel Stroke Center of Oklahoma for health and educational information and support after your stroke. The presentation, designed for stroke survivors, caregivers and family members, will be held at 2 p.m. at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center.

Thursday, April 17, Living Life with Cancer – Because living life fully is important, INTEGRIS Oncology Services is host of a monthly support group for cancer patients and caregivers. The program is designed for all persons affected by cancer and is open to anyone diagnosed with any form of cancer (recent or long term survivors), caregivers and support persons, regardless of where treatment is being provided. The ongoing support group is held on the third Thursday of every month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Troy & Dollie Smith Cancer Center Resource Library at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center. If you or a loved one has been affected by cancer, this is a great opportunity to share and make new friends while learning from medical professionals.

Thursday, April 17, Dinner at the Skirvin with R. Murali Krishna, M.D. – You do not want to miss this Preferred Health Essentials Members event at the beautiful Skirvin Hotel. Save the date for this insightful presentation and relaxing dinner with R. Murali Krishna, M.D., president and COO of INTEGRIS Mental Health and the INTEGRIS James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit, at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel, One Park Avenue, Oklahoma City. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Cost: $25. Advance payment required. Free valet parking.

Wednesdays, April 23 and 30, Equilibrium and Balance in the Elderly – Complaints of dizziness and disequilibrium increase with age. While some degree of imbalance is present in many individuals older than 60, it is essential to determine the cause of the imbalance and respond appropriately with proper treatment. Join Pamela Matthews, Au.D., CCC-A, audiologist from the Cochlear Implant Clinic, as she explores equilibrium and balance in the elderly. Reservations are required.

Thursday, April 24, Living with a Chronic Health Condition or a Difficult Diagnosis – Every year, millions of Americans are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases. Having coined the term “Healthy Survivor” while dealing with her own chronic lymphoma, Wendy Schlessel Harpham, M.D., encourages those battling cancer, heart disease, diabetes, or any prolonged illness or chronic health situation – to live life to the fullest while simultaneously doing all they can to overcome disease through knowledge, action, and hope. Harpham is the author of several books including Diagnosis: Cancer, After Cancer and Happiness in a Storm. She lectures nationally on cancer and serious illness. This presentation, sponsored by the INTEGRIS James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit, will be held at 7 p.m. at Church of the Servant, 14343 N. MacArthur Blvd.

Monday, April 28, Baptist Community Clinic – Forty-seven million Americans, including more than 9 million children, are living without health care coverage. The need for health care for this population is daunting. During National Cover the Uninsured Week 2008 (April 27-May 3) individuals, coalitions and organizations across the country will come together to promote awareness and make a difference in their communities. INTEGRIS Health will offer a free, all volunteer clinic for the uninsured at 2:30 p.m. at Olivet Baptist Church, 1201 N.W. 10. The clinic will provide adult and pediatric care, as well as pediatric immunizations, individual nutrition consultations, vision services, and monthly pharmaceuticals on a first-come, first served basis.

Monday, April 28, Mind/Body Essentials: Connect the Mind, Body and Spirit with Hypnosis – Have you ever wondered about hypnosis and what it would be like to experience it? Join Robin Potter Kimball, RN, CNS, to learn more about what hypnosis is and what it is not; who is qualified to perform hypnosis and who can be hypnotized; what does the state of hypnotherapy feel like and how can hypnotherapy be useful to an individual. Kimball is an adjunct professor at Oklahoma Baptist University and received her clinical nurse specialist in psychiatric training from the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing. She specializes in individual mental health in the areas of family and marital issues and substance abuse, and is certified in hypnosis, using the techniques to aid in smoking cessation, weight management, anxiety and pain management. This presentation, sponsored by the INTEGRIS James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit, will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence.
