March is National Nutrition Month February 19, 2008
OKLAHOMA CITY -
The Junior League of Oklahoma City has partnered with INTEGRIS Heath in a major initiative that aims to empower youngsters to adopt healthy eating habits and lifestyles. Messages about good nutrition and ways to prepare healthy meals and snacks have reached hundreds of kids in the OKC area since the Kids in the Kitchen program was launched in 2005.
Since March is nationally recognized as “Nutrition Month,” and Mayor Mick Cornett has initiated the OKC Weight Loss Challenge, in which he urges the citizens of Oklahoma City to lose 1 million pounds, the Kids in the Kitchen program is going to the heart of the matter – OKC Public Schools.
On Monday, March 3, North Highlands Elementary and Western Village Academy will welcome Celebrity Chef, George Stella, as he presents an “Iron Kids Chef Challenge,” where two teams of school kids (4th and 5th graders) will whip up some healthy recipes, to be judged by a panel of student judges. INTEGRIS Dietician Karen Massey will talk about healthy food choices, while an instructor from the INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center will stress the importance of an active lifestyle.
DATE: Monday, March 3 TIME: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. PLACE: North Highland Elementary 8400 N. Robinson Ave.
DATE: Monday, March 3 TIME: 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. PLACE: Western Village Academy 1508 N.W. 106 St.
Kids in the Kitchen is an international program, sponsored by the Association of Junior Leagues International that involves kids across the United States, Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom, and teaches our children the importance of eating well and staying healthy.
CELEBRITY CHEF GEORGE STELLA George Stella is a celebrity chef on the Food Network. His weekly television series, “Low Carb and Loving It,” is a crowd favorite and he is also the author of two best selling cookbooks. But Stella hasn’t always enjoyed such success.
At 40, he was classified as morbidly obese, tipping the scales at 470 pounds. His condition was not only threatening his career, but also his life. He was experiencing serious heart problems and was oftentimes confined to a wheelchair. Stella’s doctor warned him that if he didn’t lose weight, he would die.
Stella’s transformation began in October 1999. After nearly a quarter-century of being overweight, he began following a low carbohydrate diet. During the next few years, he dropped an amazing 265 pounds and greatly improved his health. His family’s too. In all they have collectively lost 560 pounds.
Stella’s story has been written about in many magazines and newspapers and has been featured on national television shows such as ABC’s The View, CBS’s 48 Hours, Entertainment Tonight and The Insider. He hopes to inspire others to change their eating habits and begin living a life free of extra pounds and weight-related health problems.
