INTEGRIS Health Sponsors Church-Wide Weight Loss Competition

January 30, 2008

OKLAHOMA CITY -
On October 27, 2007, INTEGRIS Health hosted the first in a series of Health Summits for African Americans. At the conclusion of the Summit, we challenged the pastors who participated to begin to promote healthy lifestyles within their congregations. We challenged the churches to lose weight. On February 1, 2008, INTEGRIS Health, in partnership with State Farm Insurance, will kick off our weight loss challenge. We are also collaborating with Mayor Mick Cornett’s “This City is Going on a Diet” campaign.

As Americans continue to gain weight at a rapid rate, many are going from being overweight to becoming obese. High blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, and a shorter life expectancy are all health risks associated with obesity. That’s why INTEGRIS Health and State Farm would like to work with area churches to create a healthier community.

INTEGRIS is asking pastors to encourage members of their congregation to form a weight-loss team. Each team will be weighed at the first of each month and an aggregate weight will be submitted to INTEGRIS Health. For churches without a scale, the State Farm Office, located at 840 NW 50th Street, Oklahoma City has graciously offered to assist in the weigh-in of those weight loss teams. State Farm will also provide challenge kits and other on-line services. The weight loss will be based on a percentage of the total weight lost by the team, because all churches are not the same size.

Accomplishments will be posted monthly in order to review progress. Monthly prizes will be given away to individuals, as well as to families for their great accomplishments. State Farm will provide a cash donation of $500.00. At the end of October we will give away the grand prize – a 42 inch flat screen television.

The challenge will begin on February 1, 2008 and continue through October 31, 2008.
