Mental Health Access to Care Increased through Telemedicine

January 24, 2008

OKLAHOMA CITY –
INTEGRIS Mental Health and the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) have partnered with Mental Health and Substance Abuse Centers of Southern Oklahoma (MHSACSO) to increase access to psychiatric care through the use of “telemedicine” at the MHSACSO’s main clinics in Ardmore, Ada and Durant.

The availability of telemedicine services through the use of mental health physician services provided by INTEGRIS Mental Health allows the MHSACSO to provide more than 35 hours per week of additional psychiatric care each month, with reduced waiting times, and increased frequency of appointments resulting in overall better care.

Charles Dukes, M.D., provides the psychiatric services from his office at INTEGRIS Mental Health in Oklahoma City through the use of equipment funded by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services through the “Innovation Center” program. The equipment allows him to see patients electronically, document their care, and write prescriptions at the various sites without traveling directly to the specific locations.

INTEGRIS Mental Health plans to offer the telemedicine services at all nine of the MHSACSO sites within the next one to two years.

INTEGRIS Mental Health is one of the state's largest provider of mental health services. INTEGRIS Mental Health offers a complete family of services provided by highly qualified care professionals in inpatient, outpatient, and clinical settings.
