INTEGRIS Health Positive Directions Mentoring Program

September 25, 2007

OKLAHOMA CITY -
INTEGRIS Health is truly committed to the idea of building a better world for today’s youth. The healthcare organization created the Positive Directions Mentoring Program in 1991. It was first established at Dunbar Elementary School and then Fillmore Elementary School. In 1998, INTEGRIS Health brought the program to Western Village Academy when it took over operations there.

Western Village Academy Mentor Orientation

The Positive Directions mission is to provide positive role models for at-risk children, help build their self-esteem, encourage them to overcome negative behaviors, and improve their classroom participation and academic success.

One mentor is assigned to one child for the entire school year. The mentor is asked to spend one hour per week with their student. In many cases, lasting relationships are formed as returning mentors continue to work with that same child for several years.

The program has been a huge success at INTEGRIS. Since the 2004-2005 school year, INTEGRIS has been able to provide a mentor for every student at Western Village Academy. During the 2006-2007 school year, 396 mentors participated, donating over 5,500 hours of their time.
