Security Officers at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center Ride the Segway

October 23, 2007

OKLAHOMA CITY -
The Security department at s is in the process of evaluating the effectiveness of the Segway™ Personal Transporter. It is a two-wheeled, self-balancing electronic transportation device that could help officers perform a variety of different tasks.

Security Officers at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center Ride the SegwayThe Segway can be used both indoors and outdoors, allowing security personnel to patrol more area than they can on foot. They can also cover great distances in a hurry, which is important in emergency situations when rapid response is necessary.

When using the device in the parking lot, the security officer is elevated and can see above vehicles, permitting a birds-eye view of any activity. The Segway is quiet and provides the ability to maneuver up to suspicious persons without being heard, unlike a security vehicle.

Officers at INTEGRIS Southwest have been testing the device for a few weeks now and have found the Segway to be user friendly. They say it responds to the officers’ reflexes, so it is easy to control. They say it has also bettered their customer relations.

“It is not only very visible, it is an attention getter,” says Byron “Bo” Boshell, director of Security at INTEGRIS. “People are fascinated by the device and approach security officers just to talk to them about it. This further enhances the security officers’ profiles in the parking lots.”

Right now, the Security department is using only one device but Pat Dorris, president of INTEGRIS Southwest, says more Segways may be ordered in the future. “The Segway is a great addition to our current security measures. It allows officers to cover more territory and may be something we eventually see at other INTEGRIS facilities.”

Each Segway costs $5,600. It is believed INTEGRIS Southwest is the only metro hospital currently using this tool.
