2nd Annual “Strike Back: No More Strokes” Workshop to Educate Survivors, Family Members, Caregivers

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Stroke Center of Oklahoma at INTEGRIS Southwest invites you to its second annual half-day workshop “Strike Back: No More Strokes…Reclaiming Your Life After Stroke” this Saturday, June 2nd. The session will begin at 9 a.m. in the Cancer Center Conference Rooms at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center.

This Saturday’s free presentation is geared for stroke and TIA (transient ischemic attack) survivors, caregivers, family members and the general public. It will address signs and signals to look for before going to a stroke center; latest treatments for stroke, i.e., carotid artery stenting and clot retrieval; and how to live an easier, safer and simpler life after stroke.

According to the The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, Oklahoma recently tied with the District of Columbia for the second-highest prevalence of strokes at 3.4 percent, placing Oklahoma on the edge of the so-called "Stroke Belt," an area centered in the southeastern United States.

“Scientists aren't sure why strokes are more common in this area, but believe it may be related to the high rates of obesity, high blood pressure and smoking,” said Dr. Charles Morgan, a neurologist with the INTEGRIS Stroke Center of Oklahoma. “That’s why it’s imperative to know the signs for stroke and how to know when to act, as well as what treatments are available and what to expect after you’ve endured one.”
