New Technology at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center Promises Fewer Needle Pricks

March 28, 2007

OKLAHOMA CITY - Venipuncture is the medical term for sticking a needle in a vein to draw blood samples, start an intravenous drip or administer medications. It is also commonly seen as one of the most painful and invasive procedures performed at hospitals today.

Sometimes, because of the patient’s age, body type or skin tone, locating the vein can be difficult. In some instances it can take many attempts or “sticks” to complete a successful insertion. This can be painful for the patient and frustrating for the clinician.

Unfortunately, it is a necessary evil. An estimated one billion venipunctures are performed annually. Ninety percent of inpatients require IV access and approximately 25 percent of patients need central venous access.

Due to this frequency, hospitals around the country are taking a stab at reducing the pain, stress and harm from venipuncture.

INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center is proud to be the first facility in the metro to try to alleviate this problem using a new technology called the VeinViewer imaging system.

Using near-infrared light, VeinViewer is the first and only patented technology to identify and locate subcutaneous veins and project their location directly onto the surface of the skin. This makes even the most concealed vascular target highly visible to the naked eye and much easier to access.

“The VeinViewer has made visualization of the veins much easier. It's like having X-ray vision,” says INTEGRIS Southwest Clinical Director Donna Raynor-Neeley, RN, B.S.N. “Being able to see the vein you are sticking makes it much easier to have a successful IV insertion, which is better for the patient and nurse. We've had several ‘hard stick’ patients have an IV placed or blood drawn with one stick using this device. Patients have been impressed when we use it to find their hidden veins.”

We will provide demonstrations and interviews to any media outlet interested in covering this unique technology. Page 629-3204 to schedule. Visit www.veinviewer.com for complete details.
