OKLAHOMA CITY – April’s INTEGRIS Health Essentials (view online calendar) programs and events include information on CPR classes, penile prosthesis, better breathing, your brain and aging, caregiver fundamentals, cancer support, migraines and exercise, joint replacement, surgical weight loss, hormone replacement, nerve deafness, senior travel, Pilates, grief support, massage, allergies, acupuncture, health and wellness facts and fiction as well as free hearing screenings.
April 2007, Free Hearing Screenings – Join the INTEGRIS Cochlear Implant Clinic and Hearing Enrichment Language Program (HELP) for a free hearing screening in the month of April. Screenings will be offered by appointment only with staff audiologists on Wednesdays and Thursdays in April at 3434 N.W. 56 Street, Suite 101. Monday, April 2, HeartSaver CPR – INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center is joining up with HeartSmart to offer you the latest in CPR and AED training. Learn all the new guidelines and methods for CPR. Adult, child and infant skills will be covered. Classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence. Cost is $45.
Tuesday, April 3, When Viagra Doesn't Work: Discussion about Penile Prosthesis – Join INTEGRIS’ Men’s University and urologist William Barnes, M.D., and Karen S. Taylor, ARNP, as they address surgical interventions for impotence when medications have failed. The frank discussion will also include demonstrations on penile prosthesis models and time for questions and answers. The presentation, sponsored by INTEGRIS Men’s Health University, will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Central Oklahoma Cancer Center Conference Room at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center.
Wednesday, April 4, Better Breather’s Club: Ambulance Service – This support group is offered free to the community the first Wednesday of every month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Central Oklahoma Cancer Center Conference Room at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center, 4401 S. Western Ave. April’s topic will be ambulance service. Family and guests are invited and encouraged to attend. Lunch provided.
Thursday, April 5, Fearless Aging: Keeping your Brain Healthy – Your brain is involved with everything you do. How you think, how you feel, how you act, and how well you get along with other people is intimately tied to how your brain functions. Utilizing the latest, most sophisticated brain imaging technology in medicine, physician and clinical neuroscientist Daniel Amen will give you an intimate look into a “working brain.” He will correlate different brain patterns with specific feelings and behaviors, such as moodiness, irritability, conflict avoidance, worrying, impulsivity, and temper outbursts, along with certain common psychiatric disorders such as depression, ADD, anxiety, dementia, and substance abuse. The presentation, sponsored by the INTEGRIS James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit and Central Oklahoma Turning Point, will be held at 7 p.m. in the James L. Friday, April 6, Caregiver Fundamentals – An estimated 44 million Americans are providing care for a loved one. Are you overwhelmed with the responsibility, or just looking for answers? Join other family caregivers for a four-session Caregiver Fundamentals workshop beginning April 6. This excellent workshop, brought to you by Sunbeam Family Services and the Alzheimer’s Association, will cover topics such as Journey of the Caregiver, Caring for Yourself, Legal Resources, and more. Sessions will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. at INTEGRIS Third Age Life Center, 5300 N. Independence.
Saturday, April 7, Strength for Caring – This daylong workshop for caregivers of cancer patients covers topics such as understanding cancer and its treatment, meeting the physical and emotional needs of cancer patients, dealing with changing family roles, talking with physicians, managing symptoms such as pain and fatigue and improving the caregiver’s physical and mental health. The workshop is free and open to the public, and will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center. A light lunch will be provided. Friday, April 13, Can You Hear Me Now: New Research in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Nerve Deafness – Join board certified neurotologist Richard D. Kopke, M.D., FACS, medical director of the INTEGRIS Cochlear Implant Clinic and CEO of the Hough Ear Institute, for the latest up-to-date information on the diagnosis and treatment of nerve deafness. Learn more about the medical conditions that manifest hearing loss; the social, personal and economic losses patients face without treatment; hearing restoration possibilities; and new research on the horizon. Kopke has earned an international reputation as an expert in the field of inner ear medicine. In his medical practice he currently sees adults and children with ear, hearing and/or balance problems, and performs cochlear ear implant surgery for profound and total deafness and surgery for other implantable hearing devices. He received the Legion of Merit, one of our country’s highest awards, for conducting research in the field of inner ear medicine while serving in the US Army. The free presentation will be at 11 a.m. in the James L. Henry Auditorium at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center.

INTEGRIS physicians and other experts will reveal some of the how-tos in life … How to maintain a younger appearance without having a face lift. How to use chair yoga for your exercise regime. You’ll hear about the recent study that indicates a risk between hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer. You’ll enjoy a continental breakfast and a buffet lunch. Plus, kicking off the day is KOCO-TV Eyewitness News 5’s Maggie Carlo. She’ll reveal what she loves about Oklahoma, her series “What Matters to You,” and she will listen to what’s on your mind. Join us from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel, One Park Avenue, Oklahoma City. Tuesday April 17, Chapter II Support Group – Chapter II is a six-week grief support group that offers support, understanding, and insight for people coping with the death of someone they love. Participants will be able to recognize some of the ways in which they have begun to grieve and receive insight and help with other coping skills that will support them as they continue grieving. They will also gain an understanding of what is happening and how relationships may be affected, how values may change, and how spiritual life may be challenged. These groups are offered at 6:30 to 8 p.m., every Tuesday night from April 17 through May 22, at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center.
Friday, April 20, and Saturday, April 21, Massage 101 – Have you ever wanted to learn general massage techniques? This is your chance! Join certified massage therapist Susan Hawkins for this two-day, “hands on” workshop. Class will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20, and from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence. Cost: $70. Each participant will need to bring two twin sheets, and will receive a workbook and a bottle of Biotone lotion.
Saturday, April 21, Connect with the Earth and Celebrate Earth Day with Breathwalk – Your breathing impacts every aspect of your life. Breathwalk breathing patterns will teach you how to acquire more energy, have better clarity, and better balance. So, put on your earth (walking) shoes and join fitness expert Darlene Paine to celebrate Earth Day and learn a new appreciation for the “air” you breathe! Monday, April 23, Baptist Community Clinic – With one in seven people in the United States uninsured, the need for health care for this population is daunting. During National Cover the Uninsured Week 2007 (April 23-29) individuals, coalitions and organizations across the country will come together to promote awareness and make a difference in their communities. INTEGRIS Health will offer a free, all volunteer clinic for the uninsured at 2:30 p.m. at Olivet Baptist Church, 1201 N.W. 10. The clinic will provide adult and pediatric care, as well as pediatric immunizations, individual nutrition consultations, vision services, and monthly pharmaceuticals on a first-come, first-served basis.
Monday, April 23, Runny Nose and Itchy Eyes? – Do you have allergies? Frequently allergies are passed off as a cold or a virus, and symptoms are treated without knowledge of the root of the problem. Join Jayna Shepherd, D.O., to identify if you have allergies and learn how to effectively treat them. The presentation will be held at 5:30 p.m. at INTEGRIS Family Care Moore, 400 N. Eastern, Moore.
Monday, April 23, Monday Nights at PACER: All You Ever Wanted to Know About Acupuncture – How does acupuncture work? Is it safe? Is it effective? Join Dr. Xiaohai Li, certified acupuncturist and a member of the national certification commission of acupuncture and Oriental medicine, to find out more and to see an actual demonstration. Dr. Li. has been trained in the fields of both traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine. Dr. Li is now in private practice with offices in Oklahoma City and Norman. The presentation, sponsored by the INTEGRIS James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit, will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence.
Tuesday, April 24, That’s What My Mother Always Told Me – Feed a fever, starve a cold. Don’t eat chocolate, it’s bad for you. Men and women alike remember mom’s advice and have even followed it because “mom said so.” Join Susie Jones, M.S., RN, CNS, and Cheryl Suttles, INTEGRIS Medical Library manager, as they dispel some of the myths mom always told you. The presentation, designed to help separate fact from fiction, will be held at 6 p.m. at Nonna’s in Bricktown, 124 E. Sheridan. Dinner fee: $20. Advance payment is required. Valet parking is available for $5.
Saturday, April 28, Hispanic Health Fair – The INTEGRIS Health Hispanic initiative invites you to participate in our 19th annual Hispanic Health Fair, Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds, Hobbies and Crafts Building. Free health screenings will be available including glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes and stroke assessments. There will also be screenings for skin, oral, prostate, and colorectal cancer, and clinical breast exams. The Hispanic Health Fair is free and open to the public.
