– September’s INTEGRIS Health Essentials programs and events topics range from infertility support, surgical and non-surgical weight loss, diabetes management, stroke awareness, training your brain, self-talk, joint replacement, journaling, grief support, to the start of the 2007 INTEGRIS Women’s Health Forum. This year’s Women’s Health Forum will offer a full two weeks of sessions on health, exercise, nutrition and the latest medical breakthroughs, all geared toward enhancing your life both physically and mentally. Headliners and guest speakers include the lovable Vicki Lawrence, former Early Show weatherman and stroke survivor Mark McEwen, and ESPN’s Roy Firestone along with more than 40 INTEGRIS physicians and experts in the field of health and wellness.

September 2007 Health Essentials Events

All Month - Free Computer Classes, Join the INTEGRIS Third Age Life Center for free computer classes each month. Classes are offered both during the day and night at several metro locations and include Basic and Intermediate Computer, Internet Basics, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and E-mail for Cox and SBC.
 
All Month - Personal Pilates Reformer Sessions, Schedule your own “personal” Pilates Reformer session with certified Pilates instructor Carol Davidson for an introductory rate: $30 a session, which includes a two day pass to PACER Fitness Center during the month of September. After September, regular rates are $40 for PACER members/$60 for non-members.

Tuesday, Sept. 4, Changing Your Weighs - This comprehensive weight-loss program is aimed at helping you rethink your approach to weight loss by focusing on three important elements: nutrition, activity and behavior modification. Changing Your Weighs is designed to help you restructure your attitude and your lifestyle for permanent weight loss. An orientation session will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4. The actual eight-week program will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 11, with classes continuing weekly through Oct. 30, atINTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence. Pre-registration is required. Cost includes an eight-week pass to INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center. Discount for Health Essentials members.

Tuesday, Sept. 4, Chapter II Support Group - Chapter II is a six-week grief support group that offers support, understanding, and insight for people coping with the death of someone they love. Participants will be able to recognize some of the ways in which they have begun to grieve, and receive insight and help with other coping skills that will support them as they continue grieving. They will also gain an understanding of what is happening and how relationships may be affected, how values may change, and how spiritual life may be challenged. These groups are offered at 6:30 to 8 p.m., every Tuesday night from Sept. 4 through Oct. 9, at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center.

Tuesday, Sept. 4 and Sept. 18, Infertility Support Group - Having difficulty conceiving or suffered through a miscarriage or loss? Share your story with others experiencing the same troubles in a caring, supportive, and understanding environment. This group is offered at no cost to participants. The support group classes are offered at 6 p.m., the first and third Tuesday of every month at the INTEGRIS James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit, 4900 N. Portland.

Friday, Sept. 7, Lift Up Your Life, 2007 Women’s Health Forum, An Evening With Vicki Lawrence -  Kicking off this year’s forum is the multi-talented and lovable Vicki Lawrence. Most remembered for her 11 years on The Carol Burnett Show, Lawrence went on to star in her own series, Mama’s Family. Lawrence gained national recognition not only as an actress, but also as a game and talk show host, recording artist, theatre performer and writer. She became the first woman to host a game show, with the daytime network version of Win, Lose, or Draw. Aware that heart disease runs in her family, she recently learned that she has elevated cholesterol. She is working with her doctor to lower it through diet, exercise, and possibly medication, and is committed to increasing public awareness about cholesterol and the importance of heart health. You won’t want to miss her hilarious stories and triumphs she’s overcome throughout life. The presentation will be held at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center Music Hall. Monday, Sept. 10, Lift Up Your Life (Learn more about Women's Health Forum and register for events online.) - In her uplifting seminar, Mary Ann Bauman, M.D., internal medicine, medical director for Women’s Health and Community Relations, INTEGRIS Health, will share the secrets to finding joy under any type of circumstance and help you focus on the “glass is half full” theory. You’ll enjoy her talk about the mind’s amazing connection and power over the body and how you can better your health by gaining a more positive attitude toward life’s lemons that come your way. The presentation will be held at noon at All Souls Episcopal Christian Family Life Center, 6400 N. Pennsylvania. Luncheon fee: $10; advance payment is required.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, and Monday, Sept. 24, INTEGRIS Surgical Weight Loss Seminar -  It’s always best to lose weight through a healthy diet and exercise. However, if you’re among those who have tried but just can’t seem to lose the excess weight that’s causing your health problems, bariatric weight loss surgery may be an option. Join Russell Gornichec, M.D., and the staff of the INTEGRIS Surgical Weight Loss Center to learn more about bariatric surgery, including gastric bypass and LAP-BAND. The free presentations will be held at 6 p.m. at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, Train your Mind, Change your Brain (Learn more about Women's Health Forum and register for events online.) - Widely known throughout the industry for her ability to break down complex scientific theories and write about them in beautiful prose, Sharon Begley is an award-winning author and journalist in such publications as Newsweek and the Wall Street Journal. Begley’s fascinating book, “Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain: How a New Science Reveals Our Extraordinary Potential to Transform Ourselves,” examines how positivity is a skill that can be trained, permanently changing brain function in an enduring way. The presentation, co-sponsored by the INTEGRIS James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit, will be held at 7 p.m. at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center.

Thursday, Sept. 13, Diabetes Control While Hospitalized - Join the INTEGRIS Health ediba Diabetes Center of Excellence for monthly diabetes support. The presentation will be held at 5:30 p.m. at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center. Light refreshments provided.

Saturday, Sept. 15, 22, and 29, Pure Pilates at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center - Join the PACER certified Pilates instructors for specialized classes in Mat and Standing Pilates. PACER’s unique Pilates Plus program offers the latest in class techniques. PACER also offers Personal Pilates Reformer sessions on the new state of the art Peak Pilates Reformer. Classes will be held at 10:30 a.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence. Cost: $10 per class, which includes a two day pass to PACER.

Tuesday, Sept. 18, Do You Suffer from Knee or Hip Pain? -  Join the staff of the INTEGRIS Joint Replacement Center for this health information seminar to learn more about the anatomy, symptoms, causes, and advanced treatment options associated with knee and hip pain. The free presentation will be held at 9 a.m. at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center. Space is limited.

Tuesday, Sept. 18, Stroke Tune Up -  Now that you are out of the hospital and have plenty of questions, join the staff of the INTEGRIS Stroke Center of Oklahoma for health and educational information and support after your stroke. The presentation, designed for stroke survivors, caregivers and family members, will be at 2 p.m. at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center.

Tuesday, Sept. 18, The Art of Self Talk – A new installment in The Art of Happy Living Series (Learn more about Women's Health Forum and register for events online.) -  Join R. Murali Krishna, M.D., president and COO, INTEGRIS Mental Health and the James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit, as he addresses the topic of self-talk, a skill that can have potentially far-reaching beneficial effects. This session will describe how one can learn self-talk based on cognitive behavioral techniques to overcome stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia and many other emotional issues. He will share his scientific insights and practical methods of discovering the power of self-talk to transform your life into a happier and healthier state. The presentation, sponsored by the INTEGRIS James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit, will be held at noon at Shartel Church of God, S.W. 119 and S. Western Ave., 11600 S. Wednesday, Sept. 19, Oklahoma Women Making a Difference (Learn more about Women's Health Forum and register for events online.) -  Pam Newby is cofounder of Special Care Inc. in Oklahoma City, a non-profit organization that provides services to children with and without special needs. Newby’s daughter, Amanda, now 26, is a survivor of childhood leukemia. As a child, Amanda was rejected from childcare services due to the public’s fear of cancer. Newby’s vision for Special Care Inc. was inspired through Amanda’s experience and those of other parents needing childcare but unable to penetrate the barrier of fear and lack of knowledge. The presentation will be held at noon at Shartel Church of God, S.W. 119 and S. Western Ave., 11600 S. Western Ave. Luncheon fee: $10; advance payment is required.

Thursday, Sept. 20, Roy Firestone -  Join Roy Firestone, one of America’s most versatile and original talents, for an inspirational multimedia presentation that salutes the greatest achievements from the world of sports and entertainment. Firestone’s music and video includes impressions of more than a dozen entertainers, sports figures, and assorted personalities. A native of Miami Beach, Fla., Firestone began his career as a sports reporter and anchor there before moving to Los Angeles. He was host of ESPN’s SportsLook for more than a decade and can currently be seen on “Up Close Prime Time” on ESPN Classic. In addition, he hosts Mark Cuban’s HDNet Face To Face With Roy Firestone. The presentation, sponsored by INTEGRIS Men’s Health University, will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Bricktown Brewery at One North Oklahoma Ave. Space is limited.

Thursday, Sept. 20, Surviving a Setback: My Recovery from Stroke (Learn more about Women's Health Forum and register for events online.) -  Nearly a year-and-a-half ago, a stroke almost killed former Early Show weatherman Mark McEwen. After much rehabilitation, he’s moving and speaking, and now travels throughout the country, telling people how to reduce their risk of stroke. McEwen stresses to his audiences, “If you’ve had a stroke, there is a significant risk of having a second one, but if you change your lifestyle and be healthy, you can lower that risk. People have a stroke and they don’t change anything. But I changed everything.” He proudly says, “They got me once, the first time, but it will be hard to get me the second time!” Join Mark McEwen as he carries out his mission inspiring people to take charge of their health! The presentation will be held at 7 p.m. at Rose State Performing Arts Center, 6420 S.E. 15, Midwest City.

Saturday, Sept. 22, “Wellness Wise Guys” 4th Annual INTEGRIS Men’s Health University (Men-U) -  Calling all “wise guys.” INTEGRIS Men’s Health University is offering free health and wellness check ups designed just for men including blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, prostate, oral and skin cancer screenings at this exciting come-and-go event. Health, fitness, recreation, product and services booths will be available, and WWLS radio, The Sports Animal, will host their Parking Lot Tailgate Party, where you can enjoy big screen televisions and food. Men who enroll in Men-U will receive the Man Card issued by INTEGRIS Men’s Health University and WWLS The Sports Animal. The Man Card provides evidence that the cardholder is a respected member of the community of men. Cardholders have the opportunity to receive “Man Points” for prizes by attending special events sponsored by The Sports Animal and INTEGRIS Men’s Health University. Admission is free. The free event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Oklahoma City Community College, 7777 S. May. Appointments required for cancer screenings. Monday, Sept. 24, Mind/Body Essentials: Writing for Life – Guided Journaling: Not Just for Breakfast Anymore -  Studies tell us that journaling is good for your health, but there are many ways to journal. Join Linda Millier Bosteels, acting director of the Cultural Arts Series at Oklahoma City Community College, for this “guided” journaling experience as she explains its background, purpose, benefits and sense of community. Bosteels is trained as a writing workshop leader in the Amherst Writers and Artists method. There will be one exercise for the entire group, so bring paper and pen! The presentation, sponsored by the INTEGRIS James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit, will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence.

Saturday, Sept. 29, Drive-thru Flu Shots -  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the peak of flu season in the United States can occur anywhere from late December through March. The health impact (infections and deaths) of a flu season varies from year to year. Now you can get vaccinated for the flu early this season in the comfort of your own car. INTEGRIS PACER Health Services will be offering drive-thru flu shots 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, at the INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center east parking lot. People age nine and older are welcome to receive flu shots. The cost per flu shot is $22. Payment for the flu shot can be made by cash or check payable to INTEGRIS PACER Health Services; Medicare will not be accepted. Pregnant women must provide written consent from their physician.

Saturday, Sept. 29, Strength for Caring -  This daylong workshop for caregivers of cancer patients covers topics such as understanding cancer and its treatment, meeting the physical and emotional needs of cancer patients, dealing with changing family roles, talking with physicians, managing symptoms such as pain and fatigue and improving the caregiver’s physical and mental health. The workshop is free and open to the public and will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Troy & Dollie Smith Cancer Center Resource Library at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center. A light lunch will be provided.
