INTEGRIS Health Participates in National Cover the Uninsured Week

OKLAHOMA CITY - One in seven people in the United States do not have health insurance. These men, women and even children are often forced to do without the screenings, treatments and medicines they so desperately need. It’s a quiet epidemic affecting the health of our nation.
During National Cover the Uninsured Week 2007, April 23 through 29, individuals, coalitions and organizations across the country will come together to promote awareness of this problem and to try to make a difference in their communities.
As part of this national campaign, INTEGRIS Health would like to invite the media to a free clinic for the uninsured on Monday, April 23. Come see first hand the extent of this problem and the efforts being made to find a solution.

Since 1993, INTEGRIS Health has operated a free medical clinic in Oklahoma City. The Baptist Community Clinic as it’s called is the largest, free, all volunteer clinic in the state. The clinic offers adult and pediatric care, as well as pediatric immunizations, individual consultations and monthly pharmaceuticals on a first-come, first-served basis.
Operating three nights a month (the second, third and fourth Monday) the clinic sees an average of 130 patients each night. In 2006, the Baptist Community Clinic had more than 3,300 patient visits and filled more than 18,000 prescriptions. A minimum of 40 physicians, nurses and non-medical volunteers staff the free clinic each evening, resulting in 3,168 volunteer hours last year.
"INTEGRIS has been and remains a strong advocate for providing health care for the uninsured,” says Dr. Jonathan Schwartz, volunteer and medical director of the clinic. “The creation of the Baptist Community Clinic in 1993, and continued support of the clinic, underscores that advocacy and INTEGRIS' commitment to provide health care for the uninsured."
