How hard is your work-out?

When you log onto www.MyPyramid.gov, you’ll be asked to enter your activity level. It’s important to be honest, and choose the level that describes you! So how do you tell?

The USDA defined “activity” according to how hard you are exercising.
Here are some pointers for choosing the “right” level:

Sedentary = No physical activity. This means that you do not engage in purposeful exercise. You do get up and move around to do “everyday” tasks, such as taking a shower or doing stop-and-go chores. But, a “sedentary” lifestyle doesn’t include anything beyond ordinary movement.

Moderate Physical Activity = Walking briskly (~3 mph), bicycling on level terrain, or swimming. At this level, you should feel some exertion but still be able to carry on a conversation comfortably. (For fitness buffs—“moderate” is defined as 3 – 6 METS)

Vigorous Physical Activity = results in a significant increase in heart and breathing rate! Examples include: jogging, (~5 mph+) swimming continuous laps, bicycling uphill, and high impact aerobic dancing. (For fitness buffs—“vigorous” is defined as 6 or more METS, or a heart rate between 74-88% peak)
